memories of bridal showers

When I planned this trip back home, I had no idea a couple’s shower for my brother and his wife (they got married last December and are planning the actual wedding soiree for this December) was already in the works for one of the weekends I’d be on the westcoast. Despite being a bridesmaid in the upcoming extravaganza, I’ve been completely useless in this wedding process. It’s the exact opposite of the other two weddings that I served as bridesmaid and maid of honor in 2009.

In September that year, my Swinger Chick Ally was marrying my cousin Carl – a wedding we had been waiting for since were were 16. I missed out on the bridal and couple’s showers but helped plan a Palm Springs bachelorette weekend. Ten girls of family and friends traveled to Palm Springs where we all crammed in a retro house, stuffed the fridge as though we’d be there a week, spent a day at the spa and ate and drank merrily.

Earlier in March that year, I made a trip back home after weeks of planning a bridal shower for my sister – a tea party theme asking everyone to show up in their best hats. With everyone pitching in, we gathered a collection of tea cups and pots, assembled a spread of tea sandwiches, arranged floral centerpieces, made our own hats, Ceci made a load of desserts and gift boxes, and everyone thought we actually had the event catered.

Next weekend, Sheryl’s family will be throwing a couple’s shower in San Jose and all I’ll do is show up. As amazing as I know it will be, I’m sad to say, I had nothing to do with it.
